首度改編川端康成代表作，描述一個性情憂鬱的高中學生，為了拋去「孤兒性格」而踏上伊豆之旅。旅途中，他與一群流浪藝人結識同行，並和美麗的舞孃阿薰發生了一段短暫但刻骨銘心的感情。雖以默片拍攝，但編導大幅擴充原著篇幅，讓電影感性滿溢。由田中絹代飾演的阿薰，純真之美極其動人，一舉奠定她的巨星地位。往後雖又有眾多重拍版本，皆難再超越本片的藝術成就。
This is the first film adaptation and the only silent version, due to budget restraint, of Yasunari KAWABATA’s 1926 literature Izu no Odoriko. The film portrays an itinerant actress in a touring company along with her brother, who meets a high school boy in a port town. The story is about their touching and sorrowful first love.
