青梅竹馬的阿雲和阿遠，是家鄉街坊公認的一對，兩人在阿遠初中畢業後，便相偕到台北工作賺錢。後來，阿遠到外島當兵，守著承諾每日寫一封信給阿雲，無奈阿雲卻因此愛上了送信的郵差……。吳念真的半自傳初戀故事，在侯孝賢導演的鏡頭之下，轉變為淡淡詩意的青春記憶與時代印象。舊日山城的優美景致，將在重新修復的數位拷貝中完美再現。

A-yuan and A-yun, just completed junior high education, are both from a small mining town. In Taipei, he is an apprentice by day and goes to night school, and she works as an assistant at a tailors. Everyone thinks they are meant for each other, so do they. They fail to see time and fate are beyond their control.
