一個在上海法租界別墅裡的豪門貴族，因文革使父親蒙冤而死，也使四個孩子從此走上完全不同的道路。有人受盡生活磨難、有人伴著破碎婚姻，有人去了美國，卻依然沒有安全感。因為母親患病，分散各地的兒女們紛紛重回已經破敗的家，昔日的恩怨也重新浮現眼前。息影多年的王祖賢在片中不再倚重以往的美艷，而將一個樸實的女性演得活靈活現。
A well-to-do, aristocratic family in the French Concession is torn apart because of the Cultural Revolution. Their four children head toward different path of lives for years are reunited upon learning of their mother's illness. Ghosts of the past come back to haunt the shattered family.
